St. Ann's Harbour is located
in Victoria County on the East Side of Cape Breton. It is unquestionably one of the most scenic areas along the Cabot Trail, providing
an unforgettable vista from any of the many
viewing points. It is an almost enclosed body of water being
fed primarily on the North end by the North River which is a Heritage River
and a listed salmon river. It empties through a narrow
channel into St. Ann's Bay where the Englishtown Ferry is located. Its flushing capacity is unknown.
The Harbour presently supports
commercial fishing (lobster, crab, smelt, eel) as well as sport fishing. Kayak
and canoe training and tours are available. It is a safe Harbour
for sailors and boaters. Tourist accommodations have become successfully
established with an interest in expanding water
activities and eco tourism for their guests. Whales, dolphins and
tuna have all been spotted in the Harbour. Many with ancestral ties vacation
in summer homes around the Harbour and many
are returning here to retire.
The South Gut area of St. Ann's
Harbour is home to the Gaelic College of Celtic Arts and Crafts, the only one of its kind in North America. It attracts thousands
annually to its classes; to the displays of the 200-year-old
history of Scottish settlement in Cape Breton and to the many Scottish musical and cultural events it hosts, including Celtic Colours
Festival this year.
It is an area of unparalleled beauty and potential for growth maintaining
and enhancing all its traditional activities.
